I ordered an engine costing nearly £700. Never received it nor did i ever get compensated by Macarthur. My bank finally re paid me 6 weeks later and i have reported them to Trading Standards. There is another forum website about this company but with 100's of complaints. They are definately fraudulant. DO NOT BUY THROUGH FIND AN ENGINE EITHER.

Ordered engine 9/12/09. Didn't arrive after 2 weeks, told courier had lost item. After another week told that engine had been found but was damaged, but they would have another engine in a week or so. Next excuse was christmas/new year holidays. Then the weather (snow). Now I have been told they have refunded me to my card but in the meantime my bank has changed my card (old one expired) so the refund never materialised. They then told me they couldn't refund to my new card on the same account as that would be fraud (!) Final words from them indicated they would refund BACS payment to my account, that was 2 weeks ago. I now cannot get any answer from the phones, they are either off or just ring out. I have requested a chargeback from the bank, but I will be showing this information to the bank tomorrow to help my case. I have used the find an engine website many times with no problem, but I will be especially weary from now on!

I have not personally been ripped off by Anthony Close (Tony) of Macarthur Salvage, Susan Jameson or Lee Kirby but I am horrified about the whole situation I unearthed when I was looking for a car engine for a friend and stumbled upon one of their websites and I think you will find the information I have extremely interesting, especially as I am detailing how to get the banks to cough up your money for Debit card payments, cheques and even cash paid in to their bank account. All credit-card holders are already protected and will receive all of their money back as will all Visa Debit cardholders as they are covered by the same Codes of Practice that all credit-cards are subject to. Someone calling themselves scotchic has been brilliant at unearthing names of Directors, disqualifications etc. that are either to do with the same salvage companies and/or Anthony Close and it is her continuing commitment to getting this whole operation investigated that has enabled me to find almost all of the information concerning Directors, websites and Company trading names.




Macarthur Salvage, Anthony Close (Tony) and Susan Jameson (Sue) were successfully prosecuted for £341,993 for just one of the nine fraudulently trading companies that I could find where Anthony Close was involved and still customers are still unable to get refunded.




This may take a few posts to get all the information here down but I think you'll find they are worth reading if you have had money taken from you by any of the 9 companies I have found that Anthony Close (Tony) fraudulently took payments through, knowing he was unable to supply any equipment as he he was prosecuted by HMCR, the VAT office, the Police and banned from collecting or processing any money in 2006 lasting until 2019. Oh and just in case anyone is interested, the Companies House disqualification notice lists his address as 3 Strawberry Fields, Chorley, PR7 1PQ in a detached house worth nearly £750,000 at the time he was taken to Court. This was still current in 2009. There is also notice on the Land Registry search that additional land was also purchased by the owner, presumably with ill-gotten gains from several thousand extremely unhappy customers. Whether he is still there is anyone's guess but this is not a difficult thing to find out for the Police once they open a new file on this career criminal but it is horrifying that he is able to live in luxury and is able to purchase land with stolen money when he has denied thousand of people their own car by collecting money for a major part such as an engine or gearbox..




Anthony Close is known as Tony and Susan Jameson is known as Sue. Both Tony and Sue have been mentioned at all 9 of the companies that I have found as has Lee Kirby who is very often one of the people that customers get to speak to. I found a mobile number posted on one of the many complaint forums about Tony Close, Sue or the many companies they were Directors in or were controlling the company illegally, something Anthony Close was taken to Court over following his earlier disqualification as he later allowed Susan Jameson to act in the capacity of a Director following his own disqualification. The listed mobile number was 07624 800 500 not that I think it will help as they just lie when they answer their calls by promising refunds which never happen.

Aside from Tony and Sue, I found many other people mentioned that had worked for him including John and/or John Johnson (hmm sounds like a genuine name), Cathy, Donna, Philip, Richard, Francesca, Dorothy, Susan, Sharon and Lee of course (assuming this is the infamous Lee Kirby who has been involved with stealing several million pounds worth of money from innocent consumers. As Tony has been prosecuted for failing to pass on the PAYE tax that he took out of his own staff's wage packets and spent it on himself, it would be nice to later find out that there are names listed among the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 staff from his many companies that he hasn't been prosecuted for since his 2006 conviction and disqualification and hopefully this man will be arrested again and placed into prison as the Liverpool Echo reported following the successful prosecution of Anthony Close.

In just a few hours I have found out an incredible amount of information about the people that run the gearbox and engine finder websites, including their names and addresses as registered through the Courts. Yes, they have been taken to Court repeatedly and it has been going on for years. Just my own searches today found illegal trading dating back to 2001 and in 2006 they were prosecuted for keeping £341,993 of customers money, VAT and PAYE tax that they had collected from their employees and used themselves. They are still operating and it is long overdue for this to stop happening. I urge all of you who have been ripped off to do the same. Anthony Close (Tony), Susan Jameson (Sue) DOB 09/08/1965 and Lee Kirby (Lee) have collected several million pounds of fraudulent payments and owe £341,993 to the VAT office, HMRC and many creditors just from the Northern Cars Ltd company that they ran until its forced closure for illegal trading, all of which have gone unpaid. Refunds almost always never get paid back to a customer and very often if a refund has been agreed or a cheque gets sent to you, the payment is recalled by the gearbox or enginefinder owners (Tony or Sue) and the refund remains unprocessed and very often leaves you with bank charges. I have not been able to uncover the Date of Birth for Anthony Close. I assume that he was not present at Court for the hearing when he was banned from owning or having any involvement in similar car companies and was banned from collecting payments as a trader using credit-card machines due to collecting money illegally and keeping it for himself without supplying any goods or giving any form of refund. On this one Court ruling alone, no bank can refuse to refund payments authorised by the bank after the Court ruling date, regardless of whether this was cash paid in at the bank, electronically or by credit-card or Debit card. Transactions prior to this can still be reclaimed on the basis that the banks were aware that they were not upholding normal business practises and allowed these individuals and group of companies to illegally process payments in the full knowledge that they were acting illegally following complaints by thousands of consumers about the business practises of Anthony Close and the companies he was involved in.

There is absolutely no point in trying to get a refund yourself from these 'really rogue traders' as it will almost never be processed and if you do manage to pin them down on any particular day and get them to agree to a refund, they will only cancel it and you try and follow the same procedure again and again. The best thing to do is to report it properly to the police, HMCR and the VAT and Tax fraud offices after checking the information I have found, plus your own additional transaction details which were not honoured. You should also apply to your bank for a refund based on the fact that they were aware that this company or person was trading illegally due to the large amount of chargebacks the company was subject to for not supplying goods to customers as reported in the Liverpool Echo. Chargebacks are what credit-card companies bill their traders for when the banks customers (you) say that they have been defrauded and recall the payment. Based on the fact that in just one Court case alone Anthony Close and Sue Jameson had 92 creditors, it should be argued that the banks involved in processing your payments were more than aware that they were illegally trading and therefore have a legal obligation to refund all of the money you lost-providing it was taken in the form of a credit-card, debit card, cheque or by cash placed in their account and providing you have the transaction details in the form of a receipt.




The companies that I have found that Anthony Close iscurrently involved in or used to be involved in before their forced closure by the Police and the Courts are:




Macarthur Salvage, Kirkby Car Breakers (sometimes called Kirby Car Breakers), Northern Cars Ltd, Engines UK Ltd, Universal Spares, National Spares, National Car Spares, Northwest Car Parts and Chadderton Garage. There are many addresses registered to the various businesses, none of which seem to be current. Searching in Google or within Companies House records for any of them will give details of the addresses, though there really isn't much point aside from verifying that this is one dodgy group of people and businesses. I am sure that I will uncover many more companies that he has had a controlling factor in.

Engines UK Ltd has altered its registered address four times in two years.

Engines UK Ltd’s address changed to Simonswood Industrial Estate, Kirkby – from one in Pendlebury, Manchester – in October 2006.

It changed again to Stopgate Lane, Kirkby on January 18 last year and then returned to the previous Pendlebury address on January 24 this year.

ENGINES UK Ltd has shared two addresses with a firm ordered to stop supplying dodgy goods.

Northern Cars Ltd’s director (Anthony Close) was threatened with prison if the company continued to supply faulty goods and refused to give customers their refunds.

So many people complained about the firm – trading as Universal Spares – it received a court order from the high court in Manchester.

The court issued an Enterprise Act interim enforcement order to stop the company supplying "misdescribed or faulty" goods – threatening prison if it was breached.

A month after the order was issued in March 2007, the company went into liquidation.

On October 11 2006, Northern Cars Ltd switched its registered address from Unit 3, Simonswood Industrial Park, Stopgate Lane, Kirkby to Clifton House in Union Street, Pendlebury, Manchester.

Six days later, Engines UK Ltd switched its registered address from Clifton House, Union Street, Pendlebury, Manchester to 3 Simonswood Industrial Estate, Kirkby.

Unit 3, Simonswood Ind Park, Kirkby, Merseyside, L33 4YS, United Kingdom as his address but the disqualifaction from Companies House lists his address as 3 Strawberry Fields, Chorley, Lancashire, PR7 1PQ. I found the postcode using the Royal Mail Postcode finder.




The other person disqualified is a Susan Jameson (Sue) at 25 Loweswater Road, Bolton, BL4 0PL and again I found the postcode myself.

The address shows one of his former businesses addresses and it is illegal to trade from an address that you have been banned from operating from.

This one company that Tony used to run (Northern Cars Ltd) has creditors of over £300,000, none of whom have been paid. The same small claims company stating they will personally refer the Director's of Chadderton Salvage to Trading Standards. I am e-mailing them to let them know of the latest scam involving the name Macarthur Salvage using the same people to see if they can report this latest scam to Trading Standards and have Anthony Close arrested (again) for failing to register any business interest with the Courts and for illegally taking payments when he has been ordered not to.

A whole host of information was uncovered by the brilliant scotchic in her post on the above forum page and she lists several different companies that Anthony Close has been involved in (with names of many other 'Directors') that were involved in his illegal trading.

I did google searches on the following companies/websites and found customers who had not received engines or gearboxes. I found that the ebay seller called northwest_parts had more than 100 satisfied customers through ebay and thought that it was strange that a company with so many complaints had so many satisfied customers, then I checked Chadderton Salvage who also have over 100 satisfied customers on ebay and they also have a string of complaints about them.so though I am posting the information found on the www.rossendaleonline.co.uk website, I am not 100% sure that they have had any dealings with Anthony Close, Chadderton Salvage, Macarthur Salvage or any of their connected companies such as Northern Cars which Tony Close was in control of, though other people seem to think they have, so I guess they must have ripped people off somewhere along the line.

Yet another engine ordered, paid for by Visa debit card and not arrived after nearly three weeks. Avoid 'findanengine' as well as Macarthur. You can get your money back using a Visa debit card on their 'chargeback' scheme. Not many people know that!! Just make sure that your card is cancelled so Macarthur can't take any more money out.

Im guessing you all used the site findanengine.co.uk I too have been conned. My advice on buying a second hand engine would be to get a recommendation from your local garage. Most decent salvage companies have websites, phone numbers and postal addresses. If you cant see or get these details give the company a miss. Also Google the salvage yard, if they are ripping people off you will find other people who are in the same position. BTW if you paid by Credit Card, your are covered by the sale of goods act 1977, the CC company will refund your money. Hope this helps!

Ordered and paid for an engine from this auful company - (Macarthur Salvage) other tel number 08003 345 434. They never delivered engine, I constantly phoned them, they kept promising delivery, in the end they said they didn't have the engine. Cant get hold of anyone, if your lucky you get the receptionist who promissed to get Richard or Phil to call back - they never do. Still trying to get my money back.
